About Limerick Institute of Technology

Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) was a prominent institution in Limerick, Ireland, known for its practical and active learning approach. Established in 1975, it offered a diverse range of programs from certificate to PhD levels. In October 2021, LIT officially merged with Athlone Institute of Technology to form the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS), becoming Ireland's newest technological university.

Academics

LIT, as part of TUS, emphasizes an active learning philosophy, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application through lab work, studio projects, case studies, field visits, and group assignments. Key faculties included Applied Science, Engineering and Technology, Business and Humanities, and the Limerick School of Art & Design. The institution offered a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as engineering, information technology, business, science, humanities, and the arts. Research was conducted through various centers and groups focusing on areas like fine art and design, social sciences, biotechnology, and sustainable energy.

International Students

TUS, which incorporates the former LIT, offers a welcoming and inclusive learning environment with international students representing over 100 nationalities. The university provides strong support services, including access support, healthcare, counseling, accommodation advice, and academic help. English is the language of instruction for programs, and international students can find information on English language requirements, such as IELTS scores. The university also has an active Student Union and various clubs and societies for cultural integration.

Campus & Location

The former LIT had five campuses, with the main campus located at Moylish Park in Limerick, adjacent to Thomond Park. Other campuses were situated in Limerick (Clare Street), Thurles, Clonmel, and a regional learning center in Ennis. Limerick, known as the "Treaty City," is Ireland's third-most populous urban area, offering a vibrant city life. Its city center locations provide easy access to amenities and internship opportunities.

Career Outcomes

TUS graduates consistently demonstrate high employment rates, with 85.5% securing employment within nine months of finishing their courses, significantly exceeding the national average. Over 62% of these graduates secure highly skilled jobs in professional, management, or associate professional occupations. The university maintains strong industry connections, with a focus on preparing students for the workforce through work-based and active learning approaches, including work placements embedded in programs. TUS also provides comprehensive career services, including career counseling, workshops on employability skills, and job fairs, to assist students in their career pursuits.
