About Akita University
Academics
Akita University comprises four undergraduate faculties: International Resource Sciences, Education and Human Studies, Medicine, and Engineering Science, along with corresponding graduate schools. A new Faculty of Informatics and Data Science was established in April 2025, focusing on AI, data analytics, and digital solutions. The Faculty of International Resource Sciences is particularly notable for its practical approach, including fieldwork and international training in resource-producing countries. The university aims to provide comprehensive education and research, integrating various studies and organizations with specialized expertise.
International Students
Akita University offers various support services for international students, including guidance from faculty advisors on academic and daily life matters. While most programs are in Japanese, necessitating sufficient Japanese language proficiency, some specialized courses are offered in English. As of May 2021, Akita University hosted 214 international students, with 123 at the undergraduate level and 91 at the graduate level. The university actively promotes cultural integration through events and aims to provide a multicultural environment.
Campus & Location
Akita University has three campuses: Tegata, Hondo, and Hodono, all offering excellent environments and facilities. Akita City, with a population of 300,000, serves as the capital and economic center of Akita Prefecture, offering a convenient and affordable living environment compared to Tokyo. The region boasts rich natural beauty, including the Shirakami mountain range, Lake Tazawa, and seasonal festivities like the Kanto festival. Transportation from Akita Airport to Akita Station takes approximately 40 minutes by bus, and the Tegata Campus is accessible by bus from JR Akita Station.
Career Outcomes
Akita University offers career guidance starting from the first year, with the general support center assisting students with their job searches. The university actively engages in collaborative research with industry, government, and academia through initiatives like the Akita University Venture Incubation Center (AU-VIC). This center aims to foster industrial revitalization and human resource training through joint research. Akita Prefecture also has a 10-year plan to develop a startup ecosystem, involving universities and offering support for business proposals.
